Sorry for the recent lack of local show updates lately (seriously, I am super sorry if you missed Boris and Torche last weekend). To be honest, I just got tired of doing them. But, there is a semi-updated list of live shows over there on the left column that should keep locals updated. Anyway, in related news, for the very first time I actually found use for logging into Facebook! That's right, the ridiculously purposeless social networking site has alerted FG headquarters of a Provo house show featuring the wonderful talent Spencer Kingman (Spenking) and that of FG featured/favourite Nat Baldwin whose recently released album, MVP, is definitely one of the best of the year. Monday (today), Dosh’s bringing his drums and loops and keyboards and what not to completely blow your mind hot on the heels of his new release, Wolves and Wishes. He’s also bringing Anathallo along for the ride with local opener Stag Hare. Mr. Thistle’s pick for live show of the week.

Friday (June 6), Calico are playing Slowtrain Music in conjunction with the release of their new album Black Pyramid hot off the heals of their recently won title of SLC’s best mellow yellow folk (don’t quite remember if this is the exact title City Weekly created and I’m not quite sure I want to remember) band. Yay!

Saturday (June 7th), Times New Viking are bent on blowing your eardrums with a wall of fuzz rattled pop candy that is sure to go down like electric syrup. Rocking it at Kilby Court with two of our very favourite locals, Palace of Buddies and Navigator, This is undisputedly our FG pick of the week. Don’t miss out!

Friday (5.23), I am going to miss Del The Funky Homosapien at The Paladium with Bukue One and it isn’t because The 11th Hour is getting middling reviews (or the fact that I have yet to listen to it). I’m just busy and burnt out on shows. However, I’m betting that those who do attend this show will be more than satisfied. Eccentric hip hop for the whole family!



Saturday (5.24), capitalizing on the re-emergence of contemporaries Portishead and My Bloody Valentine, Swervedriver are trying their hand at the come back and more power to them. Hopefully the gauzy shoe-gazers can pull one out of the hat at The Paladium.

Wednesday (5/7), Copenhagen, Denmark’s Efterklang will play their gorgeously orchestrated glitchy post rock to the Urban Lounge with special guests Slaraffenland. Efterklang released the magnificent Parades last year, and though there isn’t much competition this week, are most certainly FG’s live pick of the week as they would be on most any week of the year.

Saturday (5/10), American Music Club’s Mark Eitzel and crew are playing the Urban Lounge. With over a decade successful indie songwriting up their sleeve, AMC are the prefect band to drift away to over the weekend.

Tuesday (4.28), experimental noise rockers, Indian Jewelry, are playing The Urban Lounge with always consistent experimental raga dronester, Stag Hare. Should be a sick tight experimental night and Forest Gospel pick of the week.

Friday (5.2), Dark Meat is back with all their jam band tendencies playing with confident local upstarts Kid Theodore at Kilby Court.

Friday (5.2), Black Kids and Cut Copy will be co-headlining one of those late shows over at The Urban Lounge. Pitchfork approved so you can・t really go wrong whether you want to admit it or not.

Tonight (4.21), Man Man and Yeasayer are playing In The Venue. There is absolutely no reason to miss this show. Man Man was virtually created to blow minds live and Yeasayer produced one of the best albums released in 2007. An absolute must see.

Tuesday (4.22), Islands will be joined by Band of Annuals and Kid Theodore for their show at In the Venue. I definitely am hoping for the best when it comes to Islands' new album, Arms Way, because after the initial charm of Return to the Sea, that album died hard. I guess you can't fault the band for not being The Unicorns. Anywho, album politics aside, Islands are always fun live. Show up and be ready to smile.

Wednesday (4.23), the illustrious Saul Williams will be terrorizing Kilby Court and surprisingly they haven't moved the venue! There is absolutely no good reason for Williams to be playing a tiny venue like Kilby Court, but I'm not complaining. This show will most likely sell out. You know it's a good week for shows when Man Man and Yeasayer can't grab the coveted(?) FG live pick of the week, but there is probably very few that could steal that honor away from a Saul Williams show. And as an added bonus, local FG favourite Stag Hare will be providing the support. Another must see.

Friday (4.25), indie metal crossover band The Sword will be shattering eardrums with Slough Feg and Children at Club Vegas. I don't know if it is still permissible to wear tight leather pants to this kind of show, but if you do FG will consider paying your way.

Friday (4.25), Norfolk & Western (with the now obligatorily mentionable ex-Decemberists band members) will be bringing their country tinged indie to Urban Lounge with the likes of Weinland and Deadhorse Point. Hot stuff!

Saturday (4.26), Blood On The Wall will be playing at Why Sound. Why Sound? What is with bands playing in Logan nowadays? Well, Loganites are in for a treat because BOTW's indie rock assault is among the best in the business and their trailing along Bring Your Guns for the ride. Should be a blessed time.

Wednesday (4/9), local hits will be had at Kilby Court with the following stellar lineup: Stag Hare, Navigator, Seth Pulver and Desby Dove. Should be a terrific and diverse and psych and lo fi and poppy and strange and everything. Go see this show.

Friday (4/11), Forest World will be releasing a CD onto the amiable public at Kilby Court this weekend in the strength of additional locals Mr. Oasis, The Precinct and Team Mom. Not too familiar with the string of supporting bands but Forest World is tubular so go check it out. What else are you going to do on Friday?

Saturday (4/12), Why? will be bringing his perverse mouth (and now band) to Urban Lounge along with gloriously named Ted Dancin’. I figured out I only have to skip track two on the album to be completely comfortable with it. Check this show for sure though because these guys are super sweet and incredible live. Should be darn lovely you know?

Tonight (03/31), haughty white collared hipsters Vampire Weekend will be playing to a sold out crowd along side party rocker Yacht at In the Venue. For all the hype, this better be the equivalent to John Lennon being resurrected and reuniting with the Beatles for a reunion tour. Seriously.

Thursday (04/03), Cryptacize, AKA Chris Cohen (Curtains, Ex-Deerhoof), Nedelle (AKA Nedelle) and percussionist Michael Carreira will put their skewed, awkward pop on display along with locals Kid Madusa, Ol’ Blue and Gardensleeper. Quaint, charming indie pop for the whole family at Kilby Court!

Thursday (04/03), the legend himself, Daniel Johnston, will be playing In The Venue along with local alt country heroes Band of Annuals. A rare appearance that should not be missed by anyone even vaguely familiar with the downtrodden genius. FG live pick of the week.

Monday (today), Explosions In the Sky are bringing their Texas bred, cinematic post rock to In the Venue accompanied by TV On the Radio/90 Day Men conspirator Lichens. Explosions In the Sky have lost a few points due to involvement with Friday Night Lights, however, I am sure we can forgive the slip up by now because these guys are epic live and then there is the awe inspiring Lichens = this is a must see.

Wednesday (03.26), Evangelicals will be co-headlining with Headlights with support from The Alligators and David Williams all at Kilby Court. This is undoubtedly FG’s pick of the week seeing as how Evangelicals have dropped one of the most rulingest albums of 2008 with Evening Descends. The thing begs to be transformed live. And hey add Headlights and you have an instant party!

Thursday (3/20), for anyone who witnessed The Helio Sequences insanely high quality set and Kilby Court last week there will be no question as to why I am posting this show as the duo make their rounds down in Provo territory. For anyone who missed the Kilby show, make the drive, thank me later.

Friday (3/21), there is sure to be a billow of haze that enters Kilby Court about the same time Beach House takes the stage. Touring for their sophomore effort, Devotion, be prepared for dreamy other worldliness. With supporting sets by The Papercuts and Lord Mandrake this is a no brainer for FG show pick of the week.

Saturday (3/22), Jose Gonzales and Mia Doi Todd are set to play at the Olpin Union Ballroom at the University of Utah. Shucks, should be downright charming regardless of the size of the ballroom and the capacity of the crowd.

Playing with Nolens Volens and MC Danger Mouth, this is expected to be the funnest live experience you’ll be likely to see in your lifetime. FG pick of the week, fo sho!

Word is these dudes rock the jams live (we all ready know they do so on record) and they will be playing along side Static of the Gods and Purr Bats so why not go?

Thursday (3/06), cussily named electronic noise rock group Holy Fuck will be playing with devastating 90’s fuzz revivalists A Place To Bury Strangers who have oft been sited as the “loudest band in New York” which must have been some task to achieve. True or not, a chance to see either of these amazing groups is an absolute treat and not something to be missed. FG’s pick for show of the week fo’ Sho’!

Saturday (3/08), Portugal. The Man will be playing at club NVO in Logan? Um, we certainly love the band but are not sure if we’ll be able to make it up to Aggie country. But surely, for those who make the drive, it will be well worth it.

Wednesday (2/27), Kilby Court is hosting the show of the week. Hey, let’s just call this the show of the month and if there weren’t so many nuts shows coming up in the near future I would be apt to label this as the show of 2008. So here it is: the show is starting off with local megatrons of rock Vile Blue Shades and then transitioning into the wonderful ex-Liars swagger of noisy/awesome These Are Powers that have been creating quite a buzz for themselves. Next electrofunk/post punk heros Mahjongg (can’t hail these guys enough) will mesmerize, followed by the indispensible Calvin Johnson. And as if these four weren’t enough to qualify the night for the afore mentioned FG awards, Mt. Eerie has mysteriously dropped himself into the mix as of last week or so. It is almost too much to comprehend, rest assured this show is un-missable.

Wednesday (2/27), hip hoppers will also have something to be excited about as Sole and Telephone Jim Jesus from the Anticon camp hit up The Urban Lounge (21+). Really good stuff for those who can’t get into the indie smorgasbord at Kilby.

Thursday (2/28), Kilby is sending off their father, Will Sartain, and his band, The Future of the Ghost, on tour. Should be a wonderful local night with the likes of Bad Weather California, Tolchock Trio and Kathryn Cowles. Word.

Monday (today), Billy Harvey is playing at Kristina’s place (?) which is apparently a house. So yeah, house show which is always a wonderful venue for music I think. The address is 225 6th Avenue in SLC and the show starts at “around 8” with no opener. Should be terrific. A $5 donation is requested and there will be free treats!



Friday (2/22), Hieroglyphics & Blue Scholars will be providing college demographic a show on their home turf at The University of Utah. Here is to hoping Del’s new record on Def Jux can stand up to the hype.

Thursday (1/31), French Quarter will bring his folk pop to Slowtrain for the second time in so many months. His debut, Quarter, is certainly worthy of any number of spins and by the sound of it his live show should be quite charming.

Thursday (1/31), Urban Lounge presents a virtual match made in heaven with the incomparable Liars and the absolutely awesome No Age along with locals, Tolchock Trio. This is with out a doubt Forest Gospel's live pick of the week. It would be with Liars or No Age on their own so having a bill with the both of them is basically anointing this show as a pick of the quarter or possibly the year! Do not miss this show.





Thursday (1/31), HarryO's presents Talib Kweli, one half of the formerly influential Black Star. It is going to be difficult to try and promote this over Liars/No Age, but it is an easy choice for hip hop heads.



Friday (2/1), the dubiously titled genre award for the Slammies Mellow Yellow/Jazz band will actually hold some of the best bands of the entire series of awards with Calico, Coyote Hoods, Ether Orchestra and Aye Aye. For local shows, it doesn't get much better than this.

Saturday (2/2), Kilby Court will host the second night(?) of Will Sartain's CD release party. While harboring Tolchock Trio and Live It Up Swet on the bill, the true reason to visit Kilby Saturday is for Brooklyn indie rockers Blood On The Wall. Should be a treat!

Sunday (2/3), Kilby Court will present a close second for show of the week with the absolutely radical/awesome/incredible Yeasayer with the rising trend of MGMT. Another must see.

Friday (1/18), participating in City Weekly's Slammys, Club Vegas will host an evening of "Hard Rock" with a blistering lineup of Accidente, Loom, Glacial and the superb Black Hole. Saturday (1/19), Slowtrain will be hosting Forest Gospel’s live pick of the week featuring the anticipated debut cd from experimental indie blues star, Aye Aye, along with an equally anticipated release from elusive avant garde noister, Hew Mun, and these performances sandwiching the always amazing live set of FG favourite Navigator! Three incredible musicians, two debut releases, one night you will hate yourself for missing.
