The Argument

The swan song of one of my all time favourite bands is also, arguably, their best (I often argue this with myself). Never in Ian’s career, before or since, has he penned more affecting songs with such an air as these. Often eschewing the punk urgency that characterizes the vast majority of their work, The Argument stands as a sober affront to the divisive politics that seem intertwined with American life. A powerful reminder of the raw effectiveness of rock's most elemental components: guitars, a bass and drums.

Q & Not U
No Kill No Beep Beep
(Dischord, 2000)

Saw these guys shortly before they broke up. It was one of the most energetic, dancy, parties of a show I’ve ever attended. Just pure indie rock fervor. No Kill No Beep Beep, the band’s debut, embodies that same glorious high, something rarely captured on a record. I really miss these guys. Angular guitars, punk aesthetics, wild drumming and so so much energy. What a great record. As far as Dischord bands go, or at least Dischord albums, Q & Not U’s No Kill No Beep Beep may be my favourite. Kelly Clarkson, I applaud you for your choice of alligiance in Q & Not U buttonry.
